The Fuddling Cup and the Puzzle Jug,The fuddling cup and puzzle mug were both popular English drinking games from the 17th century up to the early 19th century. The fuddling cup (top picture) was a drinking vessel consisting of three cups melded into one connected by various tubes and channels. The cups had to be drunk from in the right order. Drinking from one wrong cup would result in no liquid coming out, drinking from the other wrong cup would result in drink being spilled all over the drinker. The puzzle jug is similar in concept. It consisted of a jug that was perforated at the neck so that the user couldn’t tip it back without spilling its contents. Some were designed with a spout on the rim, with a tube traveling from the rim down the handle. Others featured holes in a specific pattern, so that the user had to cover the holes while drinking. The earliest known puzzle jug is the Exeter Puzzle Jug, dating to the 14th century. The key to both the fuddling cup and puzzle jug was that the drinker had to maintain his or her focus while drinking, which became progressively more difficult as the drinker gradually became inebriated. -- source link
