Dionysian curtain fragment Linen and wool; 4th century Egypt (Coptic). Collection of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (X). Image released via Creative Commons CC-BY-NCThe figure of Dionysus and Dionysian imagery remained popular in Late Antiquity, especially in Egypt. Dionysus was associated with cyclical renewal and bounty, themes which appealed to practitioners of traditional religion, as well as Christians, and also signified household hospitality. In addition, a curtain embroidered with figures would ripple with moving air, adding the whimsical illusion of movement to a doorway or niche.See also:Stauffer, Annemarie. Textiles of Late Antiquity.
