#Nixon50 #OTD 8/18/1971 During her Legacy of the Parks program visit to Border Field State Park in California between Tijuana, Mexico and San Diego, Mrs. Nixon planted a tree on the U.S. side of the border before walking across the border into Mexico to speak with a crowd of about 500 people. She then walked back across to the U.S. side where she talked with a few curious surfers, including Mark Stanley of Imperial Beach who was taking part in a surfing competition nearby. News reports from the day state Mrs. Nixon told the surfers the President had received a surfboard from one of his daughters and, although she had not yet done so, she intended to try surfing.
