Are you the “hub” who often initiates contact with friends or family in you circle? This week Elise called to tell me her edgeworthia (paperbush) plant was in bloom. She lives nearby, so I jumped in my car to go see it. It was great to chat & we got onto the topic about how we both seem to be the ones who reach out to our friends. ️ When I got home I did a search for “person who often initiates contact with others” and was surprised to see the query turned up 1,100,000,000 hits. I didn’t realize one-way outreach was a “thing.” If I haven’t heard from someone for a while I will call,☎️ email ⌨️ or text them. The person I contact always seems glad to hear from me, but they very rarely reach out first. After scanning a few articles I noticed some common reasons why friends do this: •They don’t feel the need to stay connected •They’re used to you reaching out & wait for you to contact them •They might feel like they’re bothering you •They’re busy & forget about people who are off their radar The pandemic has had an effect too. When we don’t hear from friends, we cope by burrowing more deeply into our own lives & condition ourselves to feel like we don’t need to connect with others. I sometimes fear what life will be like when we’ll actually be able to get together as we did pre-Covid. A recent piece in the Atlantic says work-life balance has to include friendships. And friendships often won’t survive, let alone flourish, without a bit of nurturing. Are you the “glue” in your real-life connections? Would social circles fall apart without connectors?♂️ . . .
