Back to the Future, 1985I always enjoy the story of how Marty McFly, played by Michael J. Fox, goes back to 1955 in a time-traveling Delorean, but I spend a lot of time thinking while I watch how much I enjoy the costumes re worn by the young women. You see here Lea Thompson as Lorraine in her prom dress with Crispin Glover as George McFly who eventually becomes her date at the prom (watch the film to find out why that sentence makes any sense). Deborah Lynn Scottmade the costumes and all the scenes with the high school girls feature the dresses or separates that had the silhouette then popular: tiny waists and flared skirts. Strapless dresses were very also popular during the 1950s as were all the petticoats that you see under the prom dress which created an even larger silhouette. Even everyday clothing for girls for high school was more formal because the occasions of dress required that school clothing be as serious as a workplace. Though some playfulness in color and detail was allowed on account of the youth of the wearers. For an everyday dress, see the gingham dress in the other photo which is cut on the bias and marked with harmonized ribbon and contrasting white trim on the collar and cuffs. You can see the charm of the look even if you aren’t keen on going back to petticoats. -- source link
