unwillingadventurer:The prison scenes show Barbara and Susan to be these fully rounded female characters, and we get really frustrated that we still read that 60’s women are weak. Susan is a bit scared here and she is a bit reluctant to pitch in, but she still does, despite those fears that her grandfather might be dead. Barbara actually starts digging her way out and protects Susan. Barbara never gives up, encourages Susan and they take it in turns to dig. There’s a really nice friendship between the two of them, but also a maternal quality from Barbara, because Susan’s is written very young in this serial and she is rather dependent in this one. We don’t feel that she is weak though, she still struggles through and is actually suffering with fever. Barbara has this great inner strength to get on with the job, to calm others around her and believe in getting out. She really helps Susan. Strength can be measured in a variety of ways, not just holding a gun or blowing something up, but also resilience and determination and courage.Barbara has also come a long way since the unwilling traveller who had a breakdown in the forest. She has embraced the danger and has learnt to overcome obstacles and cope with the harsh realities of the past. They are such interesting female characters, particularly Barbara who goes from strength to strength.Hear, hear. Barbara is one of my all-time favourite characters. She’s just so brilliant and has such a fantastic journey on the show. Inner strength is exactly the right term for it. Whatever happens, whatever their travels throw at her, she always digs deep and finds the strength to battle through and to pull everyone else through with her. Such a nurturing character, and capable of being so incredibly badass when she has to be, and she does it all without ever losing her poise and dignity.Susan is written very young in most of her stories and always seems to struggle with a kind of abandonment complex that I find really interesting, but she always pushes through and tries to do her bit anyway. -- source link
