The photo above is from her installation Dots Obsession. Kusama has been acknowledged as one of the most important living artists to come out of Japan! Shes the pioneer of the Abstract Expressionism and Surrealist art movement Her sculpture installations are iconic - Remember infinity rooms? We have Yayoi Kusama to thank! Shes been creating mirror installations like these since the 60’s! In fact she was a major player in the New York art scene, known for her distinctive art style and sociopolitical activism In the 1960s, Kusama organized outlandish happenings in conspicuous spots like Central Park and the Brooklyn Bridge, often involving nudity and designed to protest the Vietnam War. In one, she wrote an open letter to Richard Nixon offering to have sex with him if he would stop the Vietnam warIn 1968, Kusama presided over the happening Homosexual Wedding at the Church of Self-obliteration at 33 Walker Street in New York and performed alongside Fleetwood Mac at Fillmore East in New York City. She opened naked painting studios and a gay social club called the Kusama ‘Omophile Kompany (kok)Here are some more of her Infinity RoomsPlus! Kusama has always been forward about her struggle with mental illness and how it has shaped and influenced her artCurator Mika Yoshitake has stated that Kusama’s works on display are meant to immerse the whole person into Kusama’s accumulations, obsessions, and repetitions. These infinite, repetitive works were originally meant to eliminate Kusama’s intrusive thoughts, but she now shares it with the world. She exhibited art alongside big names like Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol, yet Kusama’s contributions to the art world were largely forgotten! While men in the art industry profited off of her ideas, Kusama went uncredited and often struggled to get by.Yayoi Kusama deserves to acknowledged for her hard work, incredible talent and everything she’s brought to the world of contemporary artShe is now one of the best selling painters in the world, and she earned her recognition despite sexism, racism, and a stigma of mental illnessI highly recommend the documentary Kusama - Infinity for a much more in-depth look at her life and career[X] [X] -- source link
