Façade ouest, Notre Dame, Île de la Cité, Paris, 2017.I am currently working through an excellent Coursera course from Yale on Gothic architecture and the Age of Cathedrals. It includes an entire session discussing the array of sculpture on this, the main façade of the cathedral. Another session, still to be audited, discusses the glass in what is arguably the most important gothic cathedral. I have been fortunate to visit a number of gothic cathedrals and other medieval buildings. After this course I want to see all of them again with a new understanding of their character!Having worked through a number of Coursera and EdX online courses, I am greatly impressed by Yale’s offerings. I have audited five Yale courses, and all but one of those were excellent. That contrasts with the two truly awful courses from Harvard and one each from Michigan and MIT that I started but quit before completing because they were not worth the effort. Another MIT course I did complete, but that was mostly because it was comically awful, and it was fun to listen to the lecturer mangle the language and make absurd statements about subjects he clearly was unqualified to teach. -- source link
