German propaganda poster from World War One.A map of Europe, with the boundary lines of each country containingcaricatured portraits of soldiers of each nation. The soldiers ofthe Central Powers are armed with bayonets, swords and spears, attacking the cowardly soldiers of the Entente Powers. The accompanying text is translated as:At one time one spoke a lot of European concerts, and everything wasin wonderful harmony, until one day the Serb destroyed it, and theRussian immediately gave him his support. John Bull and Mariannealso quickly came along: they agreed with their friend Ivan. Forthat, they have now got into big trouble – it goes badly for themnow. All four, together with the parasites who had the audacity tothreaten Michel [representing the ordinary German], will be read theriot act by Michel, until they lose their sight and hearing, and atlast they all have their punch-up, each one just as much as hedeserves. It only takes a little while, and the concert isintroduced again; Michel will hold the conducting baton from now on,and everyone will have to follow him – large and small, neitherresistance nor coyness will be any good. -- source link
