artist-ellen:Esmeralda!! She was also really highly requested by viewers!Figuring out how to draw a “Historically Accurate” Esmeralda…. was interesting. So take these designs with a large grain of salt. First because the era the story is set in (1482) was a very long time ago & secondly because Esmeralda belongs to a minority culture in France that the government of France (and most European countries) actively discriminated against & occasionally exiled from certain regions/countries (this happened from 1416 to 1637 in various European countries/cities. More specifically/revelant-ish to our Esmeralda, France ordered the Romani people expelled in 1504. So 1482 Esmeralda could be in Paris, but finding unbiased sources/descriptions of a Romani at this time… take all of it with a grain of salt. When it came to finding reference/descriptions of medieval Romani I was lucky to find some useful descriptions of possible female clothing. So I’ve started with the oldest, then I’ll move onto an early 16th century design based on paintings by Caravaggio and his contemporaries, then for the final look she’ll be dressed in the fashion of a 1480s woman-because everyone deserves the Princess Version. ;) (and that’s what can be specifically time-accurate)The description I worked off of for this design was from 1427 (again not a Romani person describing themselves, or an “unbiased” observer, but some guy outside of Paris). The description lists silver earrings (specified two rings in each ear), a shift-dress, and a cloth wrapped across them and tied at the shoulder with a cord. Lucky for me Caravaggio’s paintings have a similar shoulder-tied wrap so I had a pretty good idea of what to draw. A supplemental description in England from 1422 had a very similar description but with the addition of a long-veil.
