Our 2015 Brooklyn Artists Ball will once again feature artist-created immersive table environments.
Our 2015 Brooklyn Artists Ball will once again feature artist-created immersive table environments. However, unlike years past which tapped a new crop of artists each time, the gala’s fifth incarnation welcomes back eight previous participants to create larger scale installations for this year’s festivities. We will be spotlighting each of these artists over the next few weeks.Duke Riley is a Brooklyn-based artist who profiles the space where water meets the land. According to the artist, “I pursue an alternative view of hidden borderlands and their inhabitants through drawing, printmaking, mosaic, sculpture, performative interventions, and video structured as complex multimedia installations.” You may recognize his nautical-inspired work as a tattoo artist, his Arts for Transit series, or his project Trading With The Enemy which was a part of our recent Crossing Brooklyn exhibition. His work is also represented in our collection.Riley Participated in the 2011 Brooklyn Artists ball and returns this year with an installation inspired by Ancient Roman naval battles (known as naumachia), their association with over-indulgence at the brink of financial and social collapse, and his 2009 installation and performance, “Those About to Die Salute You.” In it, Riley and his team designed and created boats and pit crews of museum staff from across the boroughs–us included–to battle against each other at the World’s Fair reflecting pool outside the Queens Museum. We’re can’t wait for his #BKArtistsBall installation, “The Sinking and Erecting of the USS Brooklyn” so we can once again, rally on behalf of the creative spirit of our beloved borough. -- source link
