gffa:mmeviardot replied to your photoset: THIS ARC IS SUPER INTERESTING IN THAT ANAKIN’S…i almost wish that it had been more about anakin’s anger over clovis harassing padme rather than some jealousy kick because i feel like that’s more consistent with his feelings towards padme in general… i’ve seen arguments that anakin was afraid padme and obi wan were shacking up behind his back and i don’t quite buy it tbhI HEAR YOU. I almost wished the same thing, until I thought about how that would play out in a story where the situation becomes all about Anakin. In the episodes we got, Clovis getting physical with Padme isn’t given much weight, we don’t really even know how Padme felt about it, other than that she didn’t seem to take it too seriously. (For whatever reason, it could be any number of things, from “they didn’t give her character much consideration” to “Padme’s a bleeding heart like that” to “she didn’t think it was that serious”.)But a story where Anakin gets angry about Clovis harassing Padme and then making it all about himself? I think I would have hurled something against the wall, I’d have been so angry at the show. And I’m not sure I can trust that the writers–whether it’s right or wrong (because it’s terrible to make a woman’s assault all about a man, but it’s also true to Anakin’s character and SW to have everything revolve around him, he is the central character of the Saga)–to not do that.At the same time, I’m on the same page as you, you’re absolutely right that I don’t buy the idea of this potentially contributing to the idea that Anakin thought Obi-Wan and Padme were shacking up, I’m firmly on the side of that he thought they were conspiring together and was suspicious about it all through ROTS (he was suspicious when he could sense Obi-Wan’s presence at Padme’s apartment), but it wasn’t that he thought they were having an affair, more that he thought they were going behind his back turn against him/reject him.(Though, I’ll grant, I’d be willing to listen to a case where he thought they were interested in each other because he’s interested in both of them and cannot see outside his own view of them. He loves Padme romantically, so of course everyone would want to love her romantically! How could Obi-Wan not? And he loves Obi-Wan romantically, so of course everyone would want to love him romantically! How could Padme not? Despite that Obi-Wan and Padme barely even hang out that much at all.)I’m willing to take the jealousy kick in the form it comes in here because he shows jealousy in ROTS– “And of course that’s the problem with Anakin ultimately. You’re allowed to love people, but you’re not allowed to possess them. And what he did is he fell in love and married her and then became jealous.“ –George Lucas, The Clone Wars writers meetingThat it doesn’t have to be about the fear of anything that has any kind of basis in reality or even have to take one form or another. With Clovis, he fears that Padme still has feelings for him. With Obi-Wan, he fears that they’ll turn against him and the things he’s doing. He’s jealous of any kind of emotional investment they might have in each other, all the more so because his fears are saying that he’s going to lose her, he’s going to lose Obi-Wan, he’s going to lose them both. Both times it’s his own fears that are leading straight to jealousy, regardless of what the actual circumstances are, and that’s what the dark side is–it lies and twists and warps your perspective, it makes you an unreliable narrator even within your own head. -- source link
