qwertybard:missdoodle:blackandgreyrainbow:Real Christians aren’t assholesIn High School I had a friend who was super religious, her whole family was. Despite this, she was pro-marriage equality, pro-choice, and never once tried to convert me or make me feel bad about my own religious decisions (I was and still am an agnostic). She was always kind, and treated everyone with respect, regardless of race, religion, or orientation. For her the heart and soul of being a Christian was to love others and treat others with dignity. She was a real Christian. Okay, I really get that some Christians aren’t assholes. I’m friends with lots of inclusive, non-asshole Christians - heck, I’m dating one, and she’s great. But I’ve got to say, as an apostate, saying that the only “real Christians” are supportive, inclusive, non-judgmental Christians really does me more harm than good. Because the people who have called me a demon and blamed a panic attack I had at a church on the Holy Spirit and told me to leave the country for being an atheist? They’re all real Christians, too. They sincerely believe that their religion tells them to be assholes, and they are no less Christian than the non-assholes of their religion. So how about, instead of sweeping the problems in Christianity under the rug by claiming that asshole Christians aren’t “real Christians,” the Christian Left takes responsibility for the assholes within their religion and fights against them? I’ve seen it happen, and it’s a hell of a lot more effective than just reassuring yourself (or attempting to reassure the public) that those people aren’t actually Christians. -- source link
