teashoesandhair:Favourite things: Catullus’ huge literary crush on Sappho. Most translations of Catullus 51 translate the opening line as ‘he seems to me to be equal to a god’. The translation above is a far looser and more literary one than is often cited, and unfortunately loses most of its relation to Sappho 31, but it’s still evidently derivative. This poem in its original form is written in sapphic meter, as is Catullus 11. Sappho 51 and Catullus 85 are probably not directly related, but there are definitely echoes of Sappho to be found in Catullus’ thematic treatment. Really, if Sappho and Catullus had been contemporaries, I think we know who would have been president of her fanclub. -- source link
