luca-sco: edit: sorry, I accidentally deleted the original post:/ I’ve had one of the many Headcanons/theories for the trio be that they are demons –more specifically, lesser demons or generally chaotic neutral to neutral evil spirits/ghouls or imps. I remember in middle school just thinking they might be demons, the basic ‘goony demons in complete servitude under the big bag bossmass’ trope, but didn’t really apply any traditional demonology to them. Now the idea seems more interesting with that involved, I’d say pretty possible but idk. This is just one of many headcanons/theories about who or what they are and where they came from, I have a ton more with slightly different elements, it’s ridiculous. Some, very faithful to the tone and logics of tnbc, some, clearly imaginary indulgent, and some are just old middle school ideas part of me will always stand by. @nasubionna ’s art inspired me to think on what if they had horns, and what they would look like. She draws Lock with Nubian goat horns!^^ I draw him more inspired by mountain rams, the goat mostly associated with the Aries sign, which I very much think Lock is. check they’re page out, they have amazing art and are one of the most active tnbc artists around ;) In old Hallows-eve folk lore, it’s said that the reason humans disguise themselves as scary ghouls and monsters is to blend in with the monsters and ghouls out and about at that night, when the barrier between the spirit and human would is at its most tenuous, in hopes that they are left alone. Those that do not disguise or are not convincing enough are attacked or snatched, in some, more merciful cases, only felt bad luck by demons that like to play tricks. I imagine Lock Shock and Barrel doing all of this, snatching for Oogie’s sacrifices and playing tricks for fun, less of the attacking while they are children but sometimes can be found in the mood. When they are older though …they’re extremely unpredictable. I think, more so, in the human world they are more vicious and less concerned with human life. though, depending on their mood, they can either play tricks or destroy you, they’re lesser demons, just imps, so deals and powerful poltergeistery usually associated with demons wouldn’t really be within their realm. In Halloweentown, they’re more “civil” and like regular people. This goes with the thought that even though we see most of the citizens, the trio, Jack, Sally and the Mayor etc, as quite peculiar but polite, humanized citizens in a cozy civil small town, they are pretty powerful monsters in the human world when they want to be^^ though, the trio a bit more so since they are different. Not as cruel and nasty as they could’ve been if Oogie was still alive, but not quite fitting in with the rest of the town either. Especially not with the other ghoul children. That’s just me though^^ Also, I sometimes think barrel could be a tentacle boy instead of a horn boy. Like the ones on Harlequin demon.. Not quite sure -- source link
