otterintheflightdeck:一斤染 (Ikkonzome) | #F8DAD2 | “600-Gram Dye”Ikkonzome or ikkinzome is the pale pink shade created when 600 grams (一斤, ikkin) of benibana (safflower) is used to dye a length of silk measuring 36 centimeters by 22 meters (the standard amount needed to make an adult-sized kimono). 600 grams doesn’t refer to the weight of the raw flowers but rather to that of the benimochi, dried pounded benibana shaped into balls similar to rice cakes.Because dyeing fabric bright red using benibana was very expensive in the Heian period (794-1185), red was dubbed a forbidden color for the common people except in the case of ikkonzome and even paler pinks, which didn’t require much benibana. Ikkonzome is a well-known example of a yurushi-iro, a shade that could be worn by anyone regardless of social status.(Picture sources: 1, 2, 3 | More colors)Please check otterintheflightdeck’s interesting notes about japanese traditionnal colors here -- source link
