sofiessketches:Perseverance landed safely on Mars today, woooo!!!ok my blog is mostly GOmens and Birbs but this is both a very Good Omen and a Birb fight me+++++++++From a server chat where I went a bit mad and worded everywhere:- JPL romance AU, rated T, 25k- Aziraphale is on the rover driver team, Crowley was in engineering/robotics, but now that they’re between rover builds (gearing up to getting started on Perseverance) he drives the rover’s identical earthly counterpart thru the fake Mars substrate they keep in a giant sandbox to try out maneuvers before executing them millions of miles away- They have to work together for several weeks to get the rover unstuck when it hits a soft spot and can’t get traction. Every tiny maneuver is crucial, because they don’t get feedback on whether a movement did what they hoped for several minutes, and they have to work with several driver teams and levels of administration, and above all they can’t risk getting the rover truly trapped because there’s no AAA on Mars- Aziraphale is on Mars hours so his days/nights are slightly longer than the rest of the world’s, and they cycle around slowly from day shift to night shift and back to day shift again again. Crowley just adjusts without mentioning anything and it takes a long time for Aziraphale to notice that they’re at work a few hours late, but this time late is 7am, and Crowley’s still there- Metaphorically or with some clever absurd ficcy naming device the Mars rover is Adam, the identical earth rover that they can access is obviously Warlock (thanks @princip1914 for that)- They disagree sometimes about the soil they’re seeing on camera and what’s best to do. “You go too fast for me, Crowley” “Well if you have it your way we’re not going anywhere, we need friction!” “We need to steer it into the light, the soil looks grittier there from this angle” “No, we need to steer it deeper into the shadow, the soil looks more compact there” i have no idea how soil on mars works nor JPL nor NASA nor anything i am just fictioning things don’t @ me - Anyway I think I just want them both to be big gay very shy science nerds forced to work together under pressure driving a giant RC car in a sandbox while wearing dorky polos, and maybe after a long day of arguing and playing in dirt they go have drinks somewhere in Pasadena, or maybe pancakes when it circles around to 5am- Maybe in the epilogue they road trip together to watch the 2019 solar eclipse in a field somewhere and they bring a picnic and they finally get to wear something not polo shirts maybe idk- I love you all, happy Marsday -- source link
