A drawing of Ole Worm’s pet great auk, 1655, from his book Museum Wormianum. This is the only known drawing of an auk made from a living bird. Ole Worm was a Danish scientist who studied animals and medicine during the Scientific Revolution. The flightless great auk, of which there had once been millions in the north Atlantic, had already been hunted out of existence near Europe (for its feathers, which were used in pillows) by the time this drawing was made.
