bag-of-dirt:Australian soldiers and Palestinian civilians engage in a spirited snowball battle. Beginning in July 1940, the Italians began aerial bombings of the British Mandate of Palestine. The Allies initially believed that the Middle East could become a major operational theater, concerned that the Axis forces might invade the area. This did not materialize. However, the Western Desert Campaign would launch in September 1940 with the Italian invasion of Egypt. As in much of the Arab world, there was no unanimity amongst the Palestinians as to their position regarding the combatants in the war. Some signed up for the British Army into the mixed Palestinian Regiment unit, while others saw an Axis victory as their best hope of gaining Arab control of Palestine.
