Today’s young adults will need the skills to solve a wide range of complicated global issues, from climate change to the refugee crisis. While STEM will play a large role in solving mounting global problems, behind every solution is the design, innovation, and collaborative thinking that’s promoted by creativity and art. That’s why the Brooklyn Museum has joined the Joan Mitchell Foundation and Community Works, along with young people from across NYC teen programs, to host New York City’s Youth Creativity Summit. Part of a first national series, the Youth Creativity Summits are daylong events hosted in cities around the country. The NYC Summit is comprised of workshops, performances, presentations, discussions, and art-making, all in the interest of promoting creative thinking and problem-solving. Participants will have the opportunity to explore subjects from technological design to screen printing, connect with artists, creatives from partners from every corner of the city. Partners include the Unapologetically Brown Series, El Museo Del Barrio, Beam Center, Made in Brownsville, Dedalus Foundation, Urban Word NYC, MOMAEd, and Liberation Cuisine to name a few. We seek to illustrate the significance of creativity in many platforms, connect it to the lives and experiences of young people today, and invite NYC to join the conversation!I’m Orlando, 21 years old, Teen Programs Assistant and Teen Council member, planning a workshop for the Summit. Early in my teen years, I struggled with being myself and felt I had to be someone else. But I believe everyone—no matter race, language, ethnicity, religion, and gender—is creative. And this Youth Creative Summit seeks to encourage and motivate all of us to express ourselves!Join us on March 31st from 9:30-5:30 for NYC’s Youth Creativity Summit! The summit is free and open to all teens and young adults ages 14-22, but registration required by March 23rd. Breakfast and lunch are provided! The NYC summit is produced by Community Works and the Joan Mitchell Foundation in partnership with Lincoln Center Education and the Brooklyn Museum.Posted by Orlando Pazol Mendoza, Lindsay C.
