It’s a Wonderful Life It’s a Wonderful Life is classic Christmas film that was made in 1946 and is based on a short story called ‘The Greatest Gift’, that was published privately the year before. The story had been written in 1939 but it was rejected for publication, so the author Philip Van Doren Stern wrote it into a Christmas card for his friends and family. It was seen by a producer at RKO and the idea was picked up as a film, which Frank Capra directed. Despite the success that the film has seen today, it made an initial loss at the box office and got mixed reviews. It wasn’t until the 1970’s and 80’s that the film became the classic that it is still seen as. Frank Capra described this transformation as 'the damnedest thing I’ve ever seen.’ Further, Jimmy Stewart claimed that It’s a Wonderful Life was his favourite film out of all the films he had made. It’s a Wonderful Life has become a staple Christmas film, with it’s heart warming story about the importance of being a good person and the need for family and friends. Interestingly, the FBI did not see it this way, with a memo from 1947 claiming that the plot showed the banker character of Mr Potter to be evil and stating that this was a communist trick. -- source link
