Still a little sad about Still Star Crossed being cancelled, but perhaps the concept can be revisited in the future one day.Read under the cut for some stuff about how I went about the redesign of Rosaline’s dress and hair so it was more focused to a specific time period. The series doesn’t seem to focus on one particular time period for the clothing – it’s all over the place, actually. I know the story is sort of timeless, but I wanted a more focus of a time period so the clothes could look more cohesive. I chose to do a revamp of Rosalind’s outfit from here specifically:It feels like it is trying to be something from the 15th century – the styling of the dress where it cinches in above the waistline and the dress comes down voluminously is very much the style of that time period for women. However, having no shoulder coverings and the sleeves coming down loosely would be very off for the time period. So, I supplemented it by giving her a transparent sheer fabric (chiffon, maybe?) and forwarded the pattern from her main bodice area for the sleeved sections. I don’t think this is conventional for the time period (especially the design of the sleeves), but I think it would be allowed for a modern “twist”.The way they fashioned her hair felt too simple for someone who is highborn (technically) if we’re focusing on 15th Century Italian fashion of the time. Which often involved elaborate braids with ribbon, pearls, beading – very over the top yet elegant. Though I opted out of having Rosaline’s hair down as most single women did of the time period simply because I feel that it would be more comfortable otherwise. Maybe I’ll do a quick design for her with the hair down in the future I included an altered version of the coazonni which traditionally parts the hair in the middle and comes down in a braid. I used beading instead and that comes up with a jeweled piece at the top of the head. Just cause’. Tho to be fair when I was researching paintings, there was one where a lady had something similar. Honestly, I feel that ornamental hair of the time period could go all sorts of places as long as it was a clear reflection of wealth. It looks like Rosaline (or rather, the actress, Lashana) doesn’t have that thick of hair for that scene (wavy and thick but it looks like it can still be styled fairly easily), so I wanted to try and keep to that and design that would be feasible for that hair texture. I hope it looks alright – I still have a lot of learn, though I would very much like to try and design something for a black woman with 4c hair in the future -- source link
