The communicator has a responsibility for how their message is received…unless the purpose is just to tick off a box that says “I said something.”Communication goes far beyond words, and includes tone of voice, body language, method,medium, idiom, and context, to name just a few. A person who truly gives a shit about making sure their message is received accurately has the responsibility to address a variety of factors to maximize the clarity of their message, and then, to check in to see if their message is received properly. Only *then* have they communicated well.You could read a transcript of someone saying “Nice haircut,” and on the surface what they *said* is a compliment. But said sarcastically, with an eye roll, and we all know that no compliment was intended… In fact, quite the opposite.People who refuse to take ownership for how their message is received are usually just trying to deflect responsibility for their own poor communication skills onto other people. -- source link
