I grew up in Laguna Beach (wealthy community in southern california like this) and this is how cops treat rich white girls that they pull over. I can tell you from experience that these are the same cops that will harass any person of color that dares to enter their closed community. Every white bitch I know has gotten a warning several times. I’ve been driving for 15 years and haven’t gotten many tickets but have never once been given a warning. Fuck you. They do obvious and blatant about how much they wanna murder us and protect whites. i’m a white bitch (sorta) and this is hugely true. I’ve gotten at least 3 warning when i could/should have gotten tickets. and this explains so much about why white people don’t take racism seriously: because it doesn’t happen to them, and society has never forced them to be aware of or even minimally acknowledge it. i’ve never had any negative interactions with the police. hell, the police are nice to me. that is what rich white privilege does. and until a few years ago I wasn’t even aware how many people & communities of color mistrusted cops. that’s such an obvious fucking thing, but it was only vaguely on my radar. Because the thing with privilege is, it allows you it encourages you to be ignorant. the whole white attitude of “well that’s never happened to me, so can it really be true?” is so common b/c white people grow up without being made aware of their privilege. The first 2 times I was let off with a warning, i breathed a sigh of relief and went on my way. I didn’t even stop to consider the social factors at play, i was just glad to have gotten off. But the 3rd time was a few years later, after the Black Lives Matter movement gained some traction in popular media, after the media I read & watched actually started talking about modern racism & white privilege. see white people think they know all about racism, b/c they read about it in the history books. US history taught in schools (amazingly whitewashed) serves a very important purpose to white society: it teaches us that a) racism was bad, but b) it no longer exists, and c) that it’s easy to recognize. it teaches white people that racism = slavery, Jim Crow, segregated bathrooms. that is what racism looks like. That is the white definition of racism. Police brutality, the mass incarceration of men of color, income inequality, and I don’t know how many other forms of modern American racism–none of that was acknowledged. the american education system teaches white americans that they, in the modern era, are not only blameless, but absolved of any responsibility towards americans of color. reparations? affirmative action? basic acknowledgment of racial inequality? no, of course not! white america doesn’t have that kind of debt, because Racism is Over. teal deering it: it adds up to white americans responding w/ discomfort & disbelief whenever they finally do actually hear about modern black experiences. They’ve already been taught racism no longer exists, not in any serious way, and it is so much easier to continue believing it. ok ok i’m ranting. anyway. so the 3rd time I received a warning (i was 10-15 miles over the speed limit), by then i had finally been exposed to some of the experiences of americans of color. and i had been taught to listen. and because of that, i was aware, even as the cop was writing up my warning, that this would not be happening if i wasn’t white. white allies have a responsibility not just to acknowledge but to talk about, to yell about, hell to fucking broadcast their privilege. because there are a huge number of white americans who have already learned to tune out the voices of anyone else. YO WHITE PEOPLE! Talk About Your Privilege. Because in this messed up freak of a country, white voices get more attention. If you’re white, your voice has a lot more power. and spiderman already taught us, that mean it comes with great responsibility. Last thing. When the police pull me over, i have worry about a ticket i probably won’t even get. Black americans have to worry about being shot. THANK YOU @biggest-gaudiest-patronuses Thank you. It is so hard having this conversation with white people, even those that have been my friends for years. It’s just. So. Hard. “Because in this messed up freak of a country, white voices get more attention. If you’re white, your voice has a lot more power, and Spiderman already taught us, that means it comes with great responsibility.” This. All this ^^^ -- source link
