Hercules, Ophiuchus and Ara constellations, pair of celestial globe gores (1693) by Vincenzo Maria Coronelli The oldest celestial or terrestrial globes were carved or painted directly on wooden or marble spheres. But along with the Age of Exploration came the need for cheaper and more systematized globes, and the use of gores was popularized. The printed gores, composed usually of 30-degrees segments of the celestial sphere, could easily be cut and glued to the wooden globes, simplifying the production process. As the globe provides an external (‘God-like’) view of the celestial sphere, the images are mirror-reversed; some atlas makers followed this convention in their constellation depictions (e.g. Johannes Hevelius). -- source link
