things-chelidon-draws:He was young and lively and full of beauty.In the tragedy of a world falling apart, of the exhausted republic that was on the verge of crumbling down, two great souls ripped themselves apart from that bleeding chaos: Lucretius averted his gaze and fixed it upon the cosmos, breaking free from the flammantia moenia mundi and finding greatness beyond them; Catullus, instead, found a universe inside himself, and sang of it.There is something unique in his words, from the highest to the lowest, and it is their vividness. His verses are pondered, finely chiseled, polished tirelessly with that meticulous labor limae that aims for perfection, but nonetheless they are never cold, never arid, because there is a fire beneath, there is joy and pain, anger and love, whispers of pure daintiness and roars of harsh and brutal invective, mixed altogether in a swirling vortex of screaming power. Though his poetry must be read through the filtered lens of art, it is clear that there is life in there, true life, and not true because of a mere (and rather indemonstrable) autobiographical impulse, but because the passions intertwined with it were true, and still are, palpitating under his verses, still lively enough to drag the reader in the neverending dance of his poetic voice.He was like spring, his heart still blossoming, lost in the frenetic dance of life and burning bright, burning too fast.
