yougottaletitout:Cellophane Mister Cellophane Shoulda been my nameMister Cellophane‘Cause you can look right through meWalk right by meAnd never know I’m thereNever even know, I’m there Kurt makes Mister Cellophane sound pretty, rather than angry and comedic and sad (It’s a clown’s song). This corresponds with how he tries to navigate through life, as Kurt tends to act quite aloof, and tries not to show his emotions around people he doesn’t know well. This song is the most obvious out of the auditions, because Kurt sings a song about not getting noticed with his teacher as his only audience. The teacher whose first action on this show is not noticing Kurt being bullied.Unfortunately Will isn’t getting the message. The moment where Kurt sings“‘Cause you can look right through meWalk right by me” is also the moment we get a reaction shot of Will. You know how leaning forward in your seat means that whomever you’re listening to has your attention/that you’re interested in what’s going on? (Being on the edge of your seat, for example.)Will leans back into a more passive posture. He’s not listening. This is proven in a later scene where Rachel demands she has a male lead who can keep up with her vocally: Will offers to help Artie, but he doesn’t consider Kurt. Kurt is ignored twice this episode by the way, Will doesn’t consider him a male voice, and when Finn distributes tasks for Don’t Stop Believing, he doesn’t give Kurt anything to do. (He doesn’t give Tina anything to do either, but at least addresses her. He ignores Kurt despite him being the most active participant to the conversation aside from Rachel.)Eventually, this song stays relevant for Kurt’s character for Season 1 and most of Season 2: “Nobody seems to notice.” Kurt only really starts to flourish when someone does. (Just like Mercedes.) And so, it kind of goes on until As If We Never Said Goodbye. His performance there has visual parallels with the movie version of Mr Cellophane. (Which we’ll get more into when we’re at As If We Never Said Goodbye, but most importantly, Amos ends the song with: I hope I didn’t take up too much of your time. And that’s why the mr Cellophane story of Kurt Not Being Noticed officially ends there. There’s a reason it’s THE song that fandom considers going on too long. That’s exactly what makes it so final.)This song isn’t important to only Kurt though. When Mister Cellophane gets performed in theaters, Amos generally wears white gloves. That’s an image we see back in both Sit Down You’re Rocking The Boat and Proud Mary- both are songs with Artie singing lead, who, again, didn’t get an audition song. (Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat sort of substitutes Artie’s audition even.)Another thing to notice: Kurt sings a sung traditionally performed by a man. I’ll keep track of both Finn and he when it comes to the sex of the original performer, because it’s an important part of their storylines. Particularly for Finn. -- source link
