Werner Wolff, the battle-tested adjutant to Jochen Peiper (Third Armored SS Armored Grenadier Regiment 2 “LAH”), took over a leaderless company and stopped a massive enemy tank attack in which thirty Russian tanks were destroyed in close combat.For this he was decorated with the Knight’s Cross on August 7, 1943.
