fatchance:Sandhill cranes / grulla gris (Antigone canadensis) at Twin Lakes in Willcox, Arizona. About 9,000 cranes overwinter at the Willcox lakes and playa, while the Whitewater Draw flock comprises about 25,000 birds. Depending on time of day and the whim of the birds, you may see few or none at all in the wetland areas. Both flocks usually disperse at dawn to the farm fields of the Sulfur Springs Valley to glean the remnants of corn left from the fall harvest. The bird-watching tourists from Tucson and Phoenix are sometimes disappointed, but the birds still show up in out-of-the-way fields in vast numbers. -- source link
