peashooter85:FUCK THIS MOVIE—Midway Movie Review (1976)So I just watched this movie which is a historical film about the Battle of Midway made in 1976, and I hate to rag on what is supposedly a classic movie with legendary actors, but honestly this film sucks! Now I can go on about all the historical inaccuracies of this film, but what bothered me about it was the god awful shitty film making!First I’ll start with the good stuff. The cast was good. This film has legendary actors in it; Charleton Heston, Henry Fonda, James Coburn, Glenn Ford, Hal Holbrook, Robert Wagner, Robert Mitchum, Toshiro Mifune (Seven Samurai), Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi in Karate Kid). These are all great actors and they probably could have done a better performance, but I have a feeling that has more to do with the screenplay and direction, rather than the fault of the actors. The battle is done coherently and it makes sense, you can follow what is going on. The characters are good. And that’s about it.So what really bothered me about this movie? I’ll start with the Japanese. You can portray the Japanese either speaking Japanese, which to me is preferable, or you can have them speak English with Japanese accents, which is OK. What does Midway do? THEY HAVE THEM SPEAK ENGLISH AND DUB THEM WITH AMERICAN ACCENTS!!!! Why would you do that???!!!! It comes off as really fucking bizarre!!! Why did you have Toshiro Mifune, the Japanese version of John Wayne, speak English, then dub him with someone who sounds like my nextdoor neighbor? WHY DIDN’T YOU JUST HAVE HIM SPEAK JAPANESE YOU FUCKING MORONS!!!???? The thing that bothered me THE MOST was how through much of the battle they didn’t use their own footage. Much of the footage is scenes from six or seven other World War II movies from the 60′s and 70′s as well as stock WWII footage. To me this just really comes off as lazy. Compare this to Tora Tora Tora, which used all it’s own practical effects and no stock WWII footage whatsoever. Tora Tora Tora is a masterpiece. I don’t just bring it up as a comparison, but because Midway used a lot of footage from Tora Tora Tora. Yeah, that’s a great way to make a good move, just use footage from other movies! Fucking brilliant! I’m not saying that Midway doesn’t have it’s own practical effects, because it’s does. Some of the effects are actually really good and impressive. Most are very dated, making it seem like the film was made in 1956, not 1976. 2001 Space Odyssey was made in 1969, Star Wars in 1977, and Apocalypse Now in 1979, so they really could have done better when it came to special effects. The action of the movie basically runs like this, you will have a scene with original footage and effects, then it will cut to WWII stock footage, then it will cut to footage from a totally different fucking movie!!! So basically a bunch of editors cut and pasted together footage from a bunch of different sources and turned it into a battle. I mean, they did a good job making a coherent battle out of all that random footage, but it’s distracting, lazy, and it sucks! I guess they could get away with it back in the day because most people wouldn’t have recognized much of the WWII stock footage. But imagine a WWII movie today where they have some of their own footage, intermixed with scenes from Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, Saints and Soldiers, Flags of our Fathers, Hacksaw Ridge, and gratuitous amounts of WWII stock footage from the History Channel and Discovery Channel archives. Yeah how great would that movie be? Would you wanna watch that? The worst part is a scene where a Japanese plane makes a kamikaze attack on the USS Yorktown. WTF that never happened! The Japanese didn’t use Kamikazes until around the last year of the war! To add insult to injury they use stock WWII footage of a kamikaze attack on an aircraft carrier at the Battle of Okinawa in 1945 (I think it was footage of the USS Bunker Hill). I mean, if you were an editor why would you put that in the movie? Did you really think no one would notice? FUCK THIS MOVIE!!!!Today it seems like film makers love to make remakes, reboots, and relaunches of older movies. This would be an excellent candidate. With modern special effects and good screenwriting it would be an awesome film. Just don’t get that dipshit Michael Bay to direct it. -- source link
