It is rather late in the day for us to be posting, but we wanted to share this early printed book of hours is from around 1507. Used in Rome, it has a mythological scene illustrated on the title page. Here Hercules is about to use arrows poisoned with hydra blood to shoot the centaur Nessus who is carrying away his wife Deianeira. Hercules famously died after Deianeira used Nessus’ tainted blood to dye a tunic for her husband. Since most Book of Hours’ have Christian scenes illustrated it’s refreshing to see an image inspired by Greek mythology.***[Hybrid book of hours : use of Rome], [France, ca. 1507]Call number: Ms. Codex 1531http://ow.ly/8Nji30ft8gzSchoenberg Collection***#KislakCenter #Pennlibraries #librariesofinstagram #mythology #Roman #Greek #Hercules #Deianeira #Nessus #centaur #BookofHours #illustration -- source link
