The NEW MUTANTS 1983 v 2020Prompted by a fan art challenge celebrating the 2020 theatrical release of The New Mutants. I wish that it had come out straight to digital. We are in Covid and a) I don’t want to sit in an enclosed theater with strangers and b) I don’t like sitting in theaters with other people that I don’t know anyway. This is an ode to my favorite New Mutants Artists. First Alan Davis. His early works on the New Mutants have been definitive to me. Second Bill Sienkiewicz who to me defined their characters via body shapes & body language. Finally to Chris Claremont’s creation of such singular, unique characters and personalities. I cranked this out pretty fast, in about a day. I like working that way because it’s frenetic and full of energy. I just wish that I could slow down so that I could really define & edit the characters better, especially as an homage of sorts to Davis & Sienkiewicz. With that said, I think this is my favorite Rahne/Wolfsbane that I’ve ever drawn. I feel she came out pretty close to what I had in mind. While I don’t like my depiction of Dani/Mirage, I definitely see the Sienkiewicz influence. The rest are okay. I’ve drawn versions that I’ve liked better. Anyhow, hope you enjoy, can see the influence or at least get a feeling for the moment & the characters. - Nelson -- source link
