Woodrow and Edith Wilson pose for a photo after his stroke in September 1919. On a cross country tour to build support for the League of Nations, Wilson suffered a severe stroke, probably brought on by overwork. His condition was much more serious than the White House admitted to the public. Wilson himself did offer to his doctor to step down for the good of the country, but his suggestions were ignored by his doctor and wife. His left side was paralyzed in the stroke (you can see how this was dealt with in the photo) and he was bedridden for months as his wife and other advisors made a number of key decisions. -- source link
