pettyartist:To celebrate Pokemon turning 20 this weekend, I did a quick pic of when I first starting playing my first Pokemon game.I had gotten Pokemon Yellow with the special Game Boy Color (and a super awesome accessory pack– light up magnifier, rechargeable battery pack, headphones, link cable and case– that matched the yellow part of the GBC, haha) for Christmas in ‘99. I had no idea I was even getting this system/game, and hadn’t even really asked for it because i knew my family couldn’t really afford it. Instead, I tried really hard to explain this whole “Pokemon-thing” to my parents after only seeing one comic book and a kid in a church thing playing Pokemon red and hoped that some day I’d play it.But my extended family and parents chipped in and got it for me, and I was ECSTATIC. I had never owned a video game anything of my own– my parents had an Atari and we had a computer that my dad played RPGs on (that he let me play) and we had a SNES that my sisters and I shared, but this was mine.We were on our way home and I actually jacked two AA’s from another toy just to be able to boot up my new system (the lightup magnifier thoughtfully came with the AAA battery it needed) and as the intro screen played I just knew I was going to play Pokemon for DAYS.Now, 20 years later, I draw a pokemon-based comic. Some of my best friends I met via drawing pokemon-related stuff. Heck, I have people who are genuinely interested in what I do because of my pokemon stuff, and it’s that interest that helped me conquer 6 years of severe depression. So thanks, Pokemon. I hope you continue for at least another 20 years and continue to bring people together, both in game features and in fandom. -- source link
