Antique Throne“I can still recall the time Heaven placed their eyes upon me— when the Silver Child struck across the sky and clutched their quivering talons into the very heart of my being. I was a feral wretch when they found me, devoid of honour or compassion, but when I felt our fears and our blood intertwine, I was filled with new purpose.The power I felt welling inside me drove me to higher ambitions. Suddenly a nameless brigand, left to rot in the woods, was performing miracles across the countryside. I lifted the sick out of their beds, carried rivers to the farmlands, and felled beast after beast after beast. I could feel the Silver Child and myself ascending to a greater cause.Lords shook like scared children before me and freely gave away the throne. From my new perch I oversaw castles no monster could topple. We built weapons that could boil the seas and puncture the sky. When the Vernorexia arrived I ensured we would see nothing but smouldering flowers from our battlements, but in the end it still claimed my life.I clashed with no fang or blade, I held no ground for the meek. It was poison slipped into wine as I ruminated in my garden. I was deaf to the whispers; “fanatic”, “zealot”; “tyrant”. The coddling of my country was seen as a stranglehold. I faded away under the Spring Moon, my Silver Child writhing and contorting into a beautiful abomination. In all my delusions and daydreams of glory I didn’t see the Curse of Want had turned me into the Vernorexia itself.I ask for no pity, I ask only that others look to my kingdom of dust and learn.
