Merman (January 16, 1908 – February 15, 1984) was a popular musical comedy entertainer and a favorite of songwriters including Cole Porter and Irving Berlin. She originated the roles of Annie Oakley and Mama Rose in the Broadway musicals Annie Get Your Gun and Gypsy.
