edwardthecaresser:Happy Birthday Jemmy! At midnight on 14th October, 1633, Henrietta Maria, Queen of England, gave birth to a son at St. James’s Palace. The court was filled with joy and the citizens of London rang the church bells and lit bonfires in the streets. It was not the Queen’s first child or even her first son. Charles (named after his father, Charles I) had been born in 1630 and Mary in 1631. But in an age of high child mortality a second son doubled the chances of continuing the dynasty in the direct male line. The baby was named James after his grandfather, James VI of Scotland and I of England, and the personal union of the two kingdoms under the house of Stuart was symbolized by James’s being granted the two dukedoms of Albany and York. -- source link
