earthstory:Hotspots and the opening of the AtlanticThis figure shows the location of 4 “hotspots” that are thought to be key to the opening of the Atlantic Ocean. The Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP) is a series of volcanic rocks erupted across the Eastern US starting in the early Jurassic. The St. Helena hotspot started erupting about 145 million years ago later in the Jurassic, and today it is represented by a series of small, submarine volcanoes called seamounts running from the coast of Africa to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The Parana-Etendeka province is 2 flood basalts, today found on opposite sides of the Atlantic that erupted about 140 million years ago when the continents were joined together. Finally, the North Atlantic Igneous province (NAIP) started erupting about 60 million years ago and today is represented by Iceland. Keep reading -- source link
