cyclehaul: So I’ve always had a little dream to do a tour de France… no not that one… but actually do the whole circumference of the “hexagon”. Well, after people that are doing the long march on foot, one guy is actually orbiting the country on a bike. (Site: http://www.dodtour.fr/) And he is not just making some approximate outlines, he is making sure to stay on the lines. He’s staying on the beaches, taking the coastal foot trails, and fording rivers, not to mention climbing the alps on the France-Italy border. If that is crazy, my question is how is he going to fare on some long stretches of coast that are wholly owned by the military for training and such. A long portion of our 2010 Bordeaux-Basque country tour was done inland because there was no way around a great big military beach. Otherwise, I have to objet to his choice of mountain bike. If he is going to stick to beaches and foot trails, he needs no ordinary mountain bike but would be better off with a Pugsley or Moonlander. A fat wheeled bike will do much better on the sandy beaches and on the snowy mountain trails. Heck, with the Moonlander, he could use the bike as a flotation device to ford the rivers. Maybe I should get a sponsor and propose to do it faster, seems like everyone is doing it. -- source link
