Summer is never over with a Sun god ☀*:・゚✧*:・゚ The Ancient Greek alphabet oracle is being born at long last!! (it only took… 1.5 year!?) The oracle’s history… Several Greek alphabet oracles were inscribed on pillars and temple walls throughout Hellenistic colonies of Pisidia and Lycia (modern-day Turkey). They allowed for people to read their own divinations- as opposed to visiting an oracle such as the Pythia at Delphi- by inscribing Greek letters on pottery shards or stones before casting them and looking to the publicly displayed inscriptions for reference. Apollo, as god of Divination, is the main patron of the alphabet oracles and frequently mentioned by name; however the names and influences of additional gods and goddesses are also featured, such as Tyche, Gaia and Hermes. (Archaeological oracle photos from J. Nollé, Kleinasiatische Losorakel: Astragal- und Alphabetchresmologien der hochkaiserzeitlichen Orakelrenaissance, 2007.)Each divination/oracle consists of a simple advice and statement, starting with a keyword (in Greek) which begins with the oracle’s Greek letter. They were devised to be accessible to the general populace instead of requiring the interpretation of a priest/ess and their highly personal, friendly voice resonates as warmly today as it did 2,200 years ago. Tiny creatures and an artistic collaboration!! :D Ever since I first read this ancient oracle’s simple and gentle divinations, inscribed at the entrance of temples under the patronage of Apollo, I knew that insects (and arthropods.. hello spider) were meant to be its avatars. Small creatures of summer and sun, inextricably dependent on warmth and light, the theater of their tiny lives evolving under the canopy of flowers and grass. As the Eta oracle states above, Bright Helios watches everything; a reminder that no creature or matter is too small for the eye of the Sun.It was from the Bee Maidens of Mount Parnassus that Apollo learned their special form of divination through the casting of lots. The God is accustomed to listening to gentle buzzing and murmurs, whether from insects or prayers; from creatures much smaller and more fragile than himself, whom he nonetheless shines upon and cradles gently in warm hands. While searching for insect reference photos, I encountered the shimmering work of macro photographer Sébastien Blomme @sebastienblommephotography and his playful little subjects cavorting in glittering sunlight. Their spirit was simply too perfect to only serve as reference. Luckily, Sébastien accepted to provide his beautiful art for the oracle. I also felt that Apollo would be especially delighted by photography, the very capture of light. You can see more ofSébastien’s work on his Tumblr and Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/donlope01 PREORDERS FOR THE GREEK ALPHABET ORACLE will begin later this month (mid-end September), as I am waiting to receive the first print tests (and a few goodies!). The oracle will include 24 tarot-sized cards with holographic edges in a custom rigid box with lid and a full-colour guidebook. Information and updates will be posted here and on my Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lunaria_gold ☀*:・゚✧ -- source link
