feministfront: coffeeandcockatiels: maddddddds: korra: awkward how reassuring i find this well ya duh society shames speech patterns associated with young women “Speech fillers” are just a human’s way of saying “wait a sec I’m thinking”. It means we think more before we speak, always trying to find the right way to say it. Every language has them. And people shouldn’t be annoyed by it, ever. just to reiterate because it’s a personal pet peeve of mine: “society shames speech patterns associated with young women” Just would like to point out that not only does society shame “women’s way of speaking”, but because of those stereotypes they notice it in women more than men (check out Deborah Cameron’s ‘the myth of mars and Venus’ for tons of examples of this) even though men and women’s speech patterns don’t actually vary much. There are just these abitrary ideas about feminity and masculinity created by society and they shape the lens that many people see the world through. There’s no innate quality that cause men or women or anyone else to speak one way or another. -- source link
