sporesmore:The Earthstar belongs to the family Geastraceae. Earthstars are hygroscopic, so in dry weather their petal like flaps desiccate and curl around the spore sac, keeping it intact. The desiccated mushroom will often detach from its sandy substrate and be blown around like a tumble weed. Thus spreading its spores far and wide. The next rain will rehydrate the flaps and they’ll unfurl, lifting the spore sac into the air. Now rain drops and animals can poke the spore sac, causing it to release a visible cloud of spores.-Spores&More -- source link
