rhodeskc: bigringriding: OLD-SCHOOL BADNESS. TOMMY GODWIN: BEAT THE ‘YEAR’S MILEAGE’ RECORD BY OCTOBER 1939. AND RODE ON TO 75,065 MILES FOR THE CALENDAR YEAR. KEPT ON RIDING TO TAKE THE 100,000 MILE RECORD IN MAY 1940. SPENT A FEW WEEKS LEARNING HOW TO WALK AGAIN, THEN WENT OFF TO FIGHT THE WAR. BEAT THAT, PUSSIES. There’s a twitter feed giving daily mileage reports to remind you of how much of a pussy you are compared to Tommy Godwin too. The record was set in stone by the Guinness Book of Records on recognizing the achievement. Should a new competitor beat Godwin’s record, it will not be recognized by the Guinness book of records, as they have deemed this feat to be too dangerous to reproduce. The distance covered averages 200 mi a day, but some days Tommy did more than others - his longest day in the saddle was 361 miles. Having done 277 mi in one day just once, I can’t imagine doing that kind of flogging every day for a week, let alone a year. Also, keep in mind the conditions Godwin did this under - 1939 meant bikes were heavy 3sp internal gear bikes, roads were crappy, and the blackout conditions were in effect (drivers had to cover their lights at night so as to not assist night time bombers in their effort). It is often said that more people were killed in night time automobile accidents than by actual nighttime bombing itself during this time period. It was cold, wet, and pretty shitty in general. A far cry from Australian Ossie Nicholson’s conditions of warm… sunny… can actually see… -- source link
