TO DESTROY IS TO BUILD2019-2020, 8.5 x 11 inches, laser print on mimeo ground paper, 90 pages, fastener binding, acetate film in recto and verso, self-published, edition of 15.In the recent years, Instagram has been a platform for many of us to disseminate our personal and collective luxuries through still and moving images. If we think about documentation as monuments, the act of posting online somehow resembles a ceremony, to celebrate the monument. To Destroy Is To Build examines a series of videos of building demolition I found on the app. But whose luxury is it? Whose monument are we celebrating? Buildings are generally made to shelter people. It is made of concrete, metal and/or glass, excavated from the Earth. It is a monument of humanity’s power. By destroying this symbol, documenting its collapse, distributing the documentation and engaging with it, maybe these are forms of celebration? Monumentalizing the destruction as a form of reclamation of power and reclamation of space. And maybe through printing and disseminating these images, I/we could extend this celebration, not only of the destruction but of creation. Creation of opportunity.Maybe this project is not about the reclamation of power by replacing a monument with another monument but a proposition that monuments could also be temporary, maybe made of paper instead brass or concrete, that it can be folded and opened whenever we want, and can be brought to any destination.
