luvmangosdope:theeforvendetta:ohaiym:luvmangosdope:the-real-eye-to-see:Kalief Browder was arrested at the age of 16, on charges of robbery (for allegedly stealing a backpack) and imprisoned without conviction for three years.Unable to post $3,000 bail, Kalief was sent to Rikers Island to await his trial. After more than 1,000 days at Rikers awainting trial, over 800 of them in solitary confinement, Kalief was released and his case was later dismissed. In June 2015, Kalief Browder committed suicide by hanging himself. The conditions of his detention were widely seen as having caused his mental condition and five or six prior attempts at suicide while incarcerated.Kalief was 22 years old when he died.Venida Browder, 63, the mother of Kalief Browder, died Friday at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx. She died of a broken heart.RIP to you both…Omg!!!!Kalief has been the lock screen on my phone for longer than I can remember now. I think about him every day. There are more Kaliefs than we know. I will forever reblog!!! #neverforgetMy heart hurts everytime I hear or think about Kalief’s story. For those that don’t know, the man who falsely accused Kalief was NOT white, he’s a non-Black person of color. Anti-blackness, falsely accusing Black people of crimes, being scared of Black people, etc. is not limited to white people and I’m tired of hearing this narratives that only discuss white people. These conversations around racism and police brutality need to include Non-Black people or POC (whatever term you want to use) as well. There are a number of non-Black people/POC that are contributing to our murders. This needs to be changed in every community. -- source link
