It’s better to die on your feet than live on your knees -Emiliano ZapataEmiliano Zapata poses with his Winchester Rifle. In 1911 Gen. Francisco Madero overthrew Porforio Diaz and made himself president of Mexico with support form rebellious peasants, Pancho Villa, and Emiliano Zapata. Madero, however, was not really a big supporter of reforming Mexico, and instead made himself more of a military dictator. Zapata responding by creating a Liberation Army of the South. A tough, rugged, and charismatic leader, Zapata spent the next two years overthrowing city governments and wearing down Medero’s control. When Medero responded by offering complete amnesty to rebels who threw down their arms and surrendered, Zapata responded, “If the people could not win their rights now, when they were armed, they would have no chance once they were unarmed and helpless”.In February of 1913 Zapata set out to remove Madero from power once and for all. He was beaten to it by another revolutionary, Gen. Victoriano Huerta, who had Madera immediatly executed. This should have ended the revolution, but the leaders began squabbling over the future of Mexico, and a free for all fight broke out among Zapata, Huerta, Pancho Villa, Venustiano Carranza, and Alvaro Obregón. In 1919 Zapata was ambushed and killed by Carranza’s men after being invited to a peace negotiation. -- source link
