{Happy Friday! Planning on FINALLY finishing House of Cards this weekend (not a binger at all). If you’ve been following for some time now, you’ll know my soft spot for set/production design, even sharing a post about the Underwoods’ house. Now that they’ve moved into the White House, there are new sets but similar notes…}Season 2 ended with Frank Underwood laying claim to the Oval Office after orchestrating the impeachment of his predecessor. Of course, a new administration always gets to do some redecorating, so “House of Cards” production designer Steve Arnold customized the show’s White House set (in Baltimore) to match Frank’s character. He replaced the warmish, light yellow tones used for ousted President Walker with a chillier color palette. “All of it is quite, let’s say, severe. It seems fitting for Francis,” says Arnold, who was nominated for an Emmy last year for his work on season 2.Decorating the walls of the executive residence are abstract landscapes and copies of a couple John Singer Sargent paintings. Even much of the furniture has some Underwood family edge to it. “Sharp corners and slight severity. It’s not cushy,” Arnold says.Another big piece of construction on the “House of Cards” set in Baltimore: a version of Air Force One’s interior. The plane, including conference room and seating, was built as one long contiguous set, including custom-molded windows modeled on the real ones on the commander in chief’s modified 747. Arnold says he used lots of photo research and some Boeing schematics to make the set’s details authentic–except with extra interior lighting to illuminate scenes, and whole sections of the plane that pull away to let cameras move in.*Love that palladian window in the Executive Residence, which reminds of me of a spider’s web… perfect for the Underwoods’ private space. Also, the glass pineapple with the gold barbed leaves as table lamp bases… so on point! -- source link
