This engraving is the frontispiece of Incidents of Travel in Yucatan by John L. Stephens. In the 1840s, Stephens became one of the first Americans to explore and document the ancient Maya city of Uxmal, located in Yucatán, Mexico. Uxmal was home to the Maya until the 10th century. Their earliest temple possibly dates back to the 6th century A.D. Today, Uxmal still has several ornate Maya buildings and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.Images from: John L.
