{Continuing with today’s production/set design posts… I’ve shared that first image before… but have only now discovered the house for The Ghost Writer (2010) where it was shot, and other images. } The set design was created by Albrech Konrad. Angular furniture, discreet colors, natural textures of the highest quality - stone, wood, leather - no unnecessary objects present. The interiors of the writer’s house provide us with a recipe for a masculine interior. Although the colors in the inside are mainly greys the interior makes a warm impression. Natural materials - slate, wood, as well as beautiful landscape behind the windows, are softening it (despite the presence of concrete, metal and glass). The color palette is deep, muted. Huge abstract paintings are important accents, splashes of color and pattern in the toned-down surroundings. No piece of furniture in this movie is random. We can spot real treasures here - furniture by Walter Knoll (CEOO, FK, FK 86 Lounge, Gio chairs, Living Landscape sofa), including Norman Foster’s armchairs and sofa. There are obvious inspirations of Bauhaus (German artistic school from 1920s-30s), S285 desk and S64 chair (currently made by Thonet) were designed by Marcel Breuer in Bauhaus style. The architecture of the beach house, where the main character lives, is also very interesting. The house is set in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. Its a rough piece of architecture, with its pale grey brick and floor-to-ceiling windows, and looks as if it hadn’t been finished. I was curious who designed it and where it actually is, but, as it turned out, it doesn’t really exist. The movie wasn’t also filmed in America as Polański isn’t allowed to enter the country. There was only a facade constructed in Usedom, Germany, the rest is created digitally. -- source link
