{This project by Kois Architects is quite something isn’t it? The ‘mirage’ residence is located on a steep and rocky hillside on the Greek island of Tinos, and overlooks the Aegean Sea with expansive views. The house was intended to closely integrate with its surroundings, described as ‘an invisible oasis hidden from the unsuspected eyes.’ The single level living space is covered by a rimless pool, creating a visual effect of water extending to the horizon and merging the dwelling with the seascape. Additional materials are taken directly from the local landscape, so as to match the existing context. The rectangular pool covers a single story residence embedded into the hillside. Upon approach, the only visible feature of the structure is the pool’s surface, which merges with the sea. Below, the 198 sqm dwelling is enclosed by stones constructed of local stone, as well as retained earth at the rear. these walls, along with a layer of water on the roof, provide thermal insulation to keep interior spaces cool. the building was carefully sited to stay protected from prevailing winds as well as reduce excavation impact on the landscape. described as a ‘doric’ approach, the program was stripped down to essential features.} -- source link
